Impersonal Possibility
When you want to talk about what is generally allowed or possible in a public space (like "one can" or "it is possible to"), Farsi uses the impersonal verb میشود.
To form these sentences, combine میشود with the short infinitive of the action verb. You create the short infinitive by dropping the final ن from the full infinitive, which makes it identical to the past stem. For example, the short infinitive of خریدن (to buy) is خرید.
| Can one buy a photography ticket at the ticket booth? | آیا میشود از گیشه بلیت عکاسی خرید؟âyâ mishavad az gishe belit-e akkâsi kharid? |
Expressing Restrictions
To state that something is not allowed or impossible, simply make the impersonal verb negative: نمیشود (one cannot / it is impossible). The short infinitive that follows does not change.
| One cannot walk here during photography. | در طول عکاسی نمیشود اینجا راه رفت.dar tule akkâsi nemishavad injâ râh raft. |
| One cannot enter the museum with a pet. | با حیوان خانگی نمیشود وارد موزه شد.bâ heyvân-e khânegi nemishavad vâred muze shod |
Using Compound Verbs
Many Farsi verbs are compound verbs, made of a noun, adjective, or preposition plus a light verb like گذاشتن (to put) or شدن (to become). When using these compounds with میشود or نمیشود, only the light verb changes to the short infinitive. For instance, امانت گذاشتن (to check in) becomes امانت گذاشت and خارج شدن (to exit) becomes خارج شد.
| One can check the bag at the locker room or the ticket booth. | میشود کیف را در رختکن یا گیشه امانت گذاشت.mishavad kif râ dar rakhtkan yâ gishe amânat gozâsht. |
| One cannot exit through this door without a ticket. | بدون بلیت نمیشود از این در خارج شد.bedun-e belit nemishavad az in dar khârej shod. |
