Generic Reference with Singular Nouns
When discussing an entire species or category in English, we often use a plural noun ("Elephants live in herds") or a definite singular noun ("The elephant is a mammal").
In Farsi, the most natural way to make a general statement about a whole class of things is to use a bare singular noun. The noun appears without any plural markers, indefinite suffixes, or demonstratives, and it takes a singular verb.
| The elephant is a mammal, lives in a herd, and reproduces slowly. | فیل پستاندار است، در گله زندگی میکند و آرام تولید مثل میکند.fil pestândâr ast, dar galeh zendegi mikonad vaârâm towlid-e mesl mikonad. |
| The snake is a carnivorous reptile and lives solitarily. | مار خزنده گوشتخوار است و انفرادی زندگی میکند.mâr-e khazande gushtkhâr ast va enferâdi zendegi mikonad. |

This rule applies to abstract or universal concepts, such as survival or instinct. Whether you are describing an animal, a classification, or a typical behavior, using the bare singular form effectively represents the entire category.
| The animal uses instinct for survival and camouflages itself. | حیوان برای بقا از غریزه استفاده میکند و استتار میکند.heyvân barâye baqâ az gharize estefâde mikonad va estetâr mikonad. |
