Generic Reference with Singular Nouns

When discussing an entire species or category in English, we often use a plural noun ("Elephants live in herds") or a definite singular noun ("The elephant is a mammal").

In Farsi, the most natural way to make a general statement about a whole class of things is to use a bare singular noun. The noun appears without any plural markers, indefinite suffixes, or demonstratives, and it takes a singular verb.

Universal Concepts and Behaviors

This rule applies to abstract or universal concepts, such as survival or instinct. Whether you are describing an animal, a classification, or a typical behavior, using the bare singular form effectively represents the entire category.
