To talk about what will happen, Farsi uses a helper verb combined with a shortened form of your main action.
Forming the Future Tense
The future tense uses the conjugated present tense of خواستن (to want) acting as the auxiliary verb "will", followed by the short infinitive of your main verb.
To find the short infinitive, simply drop the final ن from the full infinitive. For example, رفتن (to go) becomes رفت, and دیدن (to see) becomes دید.
Here are the auxiliary forms of خواستن used to build the future tense:
| Person | Auxiliary Verb | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 1st Singular | خواهم | I will |
| 2nd Singular | خواهی | You (sg.) will |
| 3rd Singular | خواهد | He/She/It will |
| 1st Plural | خواهیم | We will |
| 2nd Plural | خواهید | You (pl.) will |
| 3rd Plural | خواهند | They will |
Here is the formula in action with simple verbs:
| Astronauts will go to space. | فضانوردان به فضا خواهند رفت.fazânavardân be fazâ khâhand raft. |
| We will see the sun from another planet. | ما خورشید را از سیارهای دیگر خواهیم دید.mâ khorshid râ az sayyâre'i digar khâhim did. |
Compound Verbs in the Future Tense
For compound verbs, the auxiliary splits the compound. Place the conjugated form of خواستن after the non-verbal part (the noun or adjective) and before the short infinitive of the verbal part.
For example, to conjugate کاوش کردن (to explore) for "they", combine کاوش + خواهند + کرد:
| They will explore this planet with new technology. | آنها با تکنولوژی جدید این سیاره را کاوش خواهند کرد.ânhâ bâ teknolozhi jadid in sayyâre râ kâvosh khâhand kard. |
Here are a few more examples of the future tense:
| We will build the first base on Mars. | ما اولین پایگاه را در مریخ خواهیم ساخت.mâ avvalin pâygâh râ dar merrikh khâhim sâkht |
| A robot can go to Mars, but humans will build a base. | ربات میتواند به مریخ برود، اما انسانها یک پایگاه خواهند ساخت.robât mitavânad be merrikh beravad, ammâ ensân-hâ yek pâygâh khâhand sâkht. |
