Formal prepositions (dar tul-e, az tarigh-e)

The Medium: Communicating "Via"

In official and administrative settings, Farsi uses the formal compound preposition از طریق to say "via," "through," or "by means of." It links to the following noun using the unseen linking vowel (ezafe).

The Timeframe: Expressing Duration

To establish the timeframe for an official process, Farsi uses two interchangeable prepositions to mean "during" or "throughout." Both connect to the following noun using the ezafe:

  • در طول (literally "in the length of")
  • طی ("in the course of")

Combining Time and Method

Official correspondence often requires you to outline both when and how something happens. You can comfortably use a duration preposition alongside a medium preposition in the same sentence to give instructions or track progress.
