Continuing an Action
To express that someone is "continuing" an activity or process, Farsi uses the compound verb ادامه دادن. This verb pairs with the preposition به (to/at).
Unlike English, which links "continue" directly to a verb, Farsi links ادامه دادن به to a noun or a verbal noun (like "planting" or "afforestation").
ادامه دادن به + [Noun / Verbal Noun]
| We must continue planting saplings in this campaign. | ما باید در این پویش به کاشت نهال ادامه دهیم.mâ bâyad dar in puyesh be kâsht-e nahâl edâme dahim. |
| Despite the problems, the farmers continue tree planting. | علیرغم مشکلات، کشاورزان به درختکاری ادامه میدهند.ali-raghm-e moshkelât, keshâvarzân be derakhtkâri edâme midahand. |
Using Different Tenses
Because ادامه دادن is a standard compound verb, ادامه remains fixed, while دادن conjugates for subject, tense, and mood. The structure به + [Noun] stays exactly the same.
| They have been continuing afforestation in this region for five years. | پنج سال است که به جنگلکاری در این منطقه ادامه میدهند.panj sâl ast ke be jangal-kâri dar in mantaghe edâme midahand. |
When following modals like باید (must), remember to conjugate دادن in the subjunctive:
| We must continue combating desertification to make the barren lands vibrant. | باید به کویرزدایی ادامه دهیم تا زمینهای بایر را سرزنده کنیم.bâyad be kavir-zodâyi edâme dahim tâ zamin-hâ-ye bâyer râ sarzende konim. |
Spoken Farsi
This structure is identical in conversational Farsi, with standard spoken contractions (e.g., میدهند becomes میدن).
| In grassroots campaigns, people continue tree planting with mutual assistance. | تو پویشای خودجوش، مردم با همیاری به درختکاری ادامه میدن.tu poyeshâ-ye khodjush, mardom bâ hamyâri be derakhtkâri edâme midan. |
