Questions & Answers about Het eiland ligt in het oosten van het land.
Why does the sentence use ligt instead of is?
In Dutch, you rarely use zijn (to be) to say where an object or place is located. For geographical locations like countries, cities, and islands, you must use liggen (to lie). Therefore, the island ligt (lies) in the east.
Why is it in het oosten instead of just in oost?
When referring to a region as a noun (the east, the north), Dutch adds -en to the direction: het oosten, het noorden, etc. You generally only use the short forms like oost when they are part of a compound name, like Oost-Europa (Eastern Europe).
Are all compass directions het words like het oosten?
Yes! When used as nouns, all four cardinal directions are neuter words. You will always say het noorden, het oosten, het zuiden, and het westen.
The word eiland means "island". Why isn't there an "s" in the Dutch word?
English actually added the "s" to "island" much later by mistake, thinking it was related to the French-derived word "isle"! The Dutch word eiland kept the original Germanic spelling. Remember that the d at the end of eiland is pronounced like a "t".
