Why is the past participle uitgetrokken instead of geuittrokken?
Uitgetrokken comes from the separable verb uittrekken (to take off). When forming the past participle of a separable verb, the -ge- gets sandwiched right between the separable prefix (uit-) and the main part of the verb (trokken).
How do I know the root verb changes to -trokken?
The base verb here is trekken (to pull or draw), which is an irregular verb. Its past participle changes the vowel from an e to an o, becoming getrokken. When you add the prefix uit-, the full word becomes uitgetrokken.
Why does uitgetrokken go all the way at the end of the sentence?
In Dutch present perfect sentences, the helping verb (here, heeft) stays in the normal second position in the sentence. The past participle (uitgetrokken) gets pushed to the very end of the clause, after the object (haar schoenen).
Could I use Ze instead of Zij here?
