Questions & Answers about Fonkelt de edelsteen genoeg?
How is the word edelsteen constructed?
It is a compound of edel (noble, precious) and steen (stone). You will also see edel used in other contexts indicating high value, such as edelmetaal (precious metal).
Could I put genoeg directly after the verb, saying Fonkelt genoeg de edelsteen?
No, that would be incorrect. In a yes/no question, the finite verb (fonkelt) and the subject (de edelsteen) must stay together through inversion. The adverb genoeg modifying the verb gets pushed to the end of the clause.
What is the nuance between fonkelen and schitteren, which both mean to sparkle?
Fonkelen specifically describes a flickering, twinkling light, which is why it is perfectly used for a cut gemstone or a star in the night sky. Schitteren describes a brighter, more intense glare or brilliance, and is also used figuratively to mean to excel or shine at a skill.
How could I use an evaluative adjective and a dative complement to say 'The gemstone is sparkly enough for me'?
Because the original sentence uses an active verb, you would first need to change the sentence to use an adjective to apply the lesson's grammar. You could say De edelsteen is me fonkelend genoeg. Here, the dative pronoun me (to me) complements the evaluative phrase fonkelend genoeg (sparkly enough).
