Questions & Answers about Aangezien de zon scheen, vervaagde de kleur.
This lesson focuses on vowel shifts in words like vergroot changing to vergrote. Why doesn't the long 'a' sound in vervaagde shift to a single 'a'?
Whether it is the simple past tense (as in this sentence) or an attributive past participle (like de vervaagde kleur), the spelling logic is the same. In a word like vergrote (ver-gro-te), the vowel is in an open syllable, so it needs only one 'o'. But in vervaagde, the syllables divide as ver-vaag-de. Because the 'a' is trapped in a closed syllable ending in 'g', it must remain a double 'a' to keep its long sound.
The infinitive is vervagen. Why do we add -de instead of -te for the past tense here?
We use the 't kofschip rule. First, find the stem by dropping -en from vervagen, giving us the raw stem vervag- (which we adjust to vervaag- for pronunciation). The final letter of that raw stem is 'g'. Since 'g' is not one of the voiceless consonants in 't kofschip (t, k, f, s, c, h, p), the past tense ending gets a 'd', making it vervaagde.
Could I use omdat instead of aangezien here?
Yes, omdat (because) is perfectly fine and follows the exact same word order rules, pushing the verb scheen to the end of the clause. However, aangezien is a great B2 word that translates closer to 'since' or 'given that.' It is slightly more formal and is very commonly used at the very beginning of a sentence to state a known circumstance.
