Why is it ervan instead of just using het to mean "it"?
In Dutch, you usually cannot put a preposition right before het when talking about an inanimate object. Instead, het turns into er and attaches to the front of the preposition. So, instead of saying van het, you must use the combined word ervan (literally "thereof").
Why do we need the van part? Doesn't genieten already mean "enjoy"?
In English, you just "enjoy" something directly. But in Dutch, this verb always requires a specific preposition to connect it to the object: genieten van (literally "to enjoy of"). Because you have to include van, it merges with the pronoun to create ervan.
How would I say this if I named the specific thing, like "I enjoy the sun"?
If you name the actual thing instead of just saying "it", you don't use er. You just use the normal preposition van followed by the noun. For example: Ik geniet van de zon.
Does ervan always stay together as one word?
Not always! In our short sentence, they stay together because there are no other words in the sentence. But in longer sentences, er and van usually split up. For example, if you add the word altijd (always), it goes between them: Ik geniet er altijd van.
