Why do we use lust instead of hou van or vind leuk to say "like"?
In Dutch, the verb lusten is used specifically to say you like (or don't like) the taste of food and drinks. You use houden van or leuk vinden for people, objects, and activities, but for eating, lusten is the standard word.
The English translation uses "not". Why does the Dutch sentence use geen instead of niet?
English says "I do not like fish", but Dutch grammar requires geen (meaning "no" or "not any") when you negate an indefinite noun. Because vis is just a general category here without a specific article like "de" or "het", you have to use geen. It literally translates to "I like no fish."
How does the verb lusten change for other subjects, like "hij" (he)?
It follows the regular rules. The stem is lust. For hij, zij, and jij, you normally add a -t to the stem. But since lust already ends in a -t, it stays exactly the same: hij lust, zij lust, and jij lust.
