Why does paarse get an -e at the end, but mooi doesn't?
In Dutch, an adjective usually gets an extra -e when it is placed directly before the noun it describes (like paarse bloemen). However, when the adjective comes later in the sentence after a verb (like zijn mooi), it stays in its basic form and never gets an -e.
The dictionary word for purple is paars. Why did it lose an a in this sentence?
This is a standard Dutch spelling rule. The double aa in paars makes a long vowel sound. When we add the -e, the word splits into syllables as paar-se. Because that first syllable now ends in a single vowel, it automatically makes a long sound. We drop the extra a because it is no longer needed to keep the sound long.
