The reciprocal pronoun: elkaar
The Dutch word for "each other" is elkaar. Use this reciprocal pronoun when an action goes both ways.
When an interaction involves a preposition, place it directly before elkaar, just like in English ("with each other", "about each other").
| We have a match, so that we can chat with each other. | We hebben een match, zodat we met elkaar kunnen chatten. |
| While they chat, they learn a lot about each other. | Terwijl ze chatten, leren ze veel over elkaar. |
Fixed prepositions
Many Dutch verbs and adjectives require a specific fixed preposition. When these actions are mutual, the preposition pairs perfectly with elkaar.
Common fixed prepositions in this lesson include:
- verliefd op (in love with)
- passen bij (to suit / match with)
- eerlijk tegen (honest with)
- voelen voor (to feel for)
| Because the interest is mutual, they are in love with each other. | Omdat de interesse wederzijds is, zijn ze verliefd op elkaar. |
| They do not suit each other and therefore they reject each other. | Zij passen niet bij elkaar en daarom wijzen ze elkaar af. |
| We are honest with each other, so that we have no secrets. | Wij zijn eerlijk tegen elkaar, zodat we geen geheimen hebben. |
| If they feel nothing for each other, they reject the match. | Als ze niets voor elkaar voelen, wijzen ze de match af. |
Sharing and possessing
Use van elkaar (of each other) to indicate possession or association.
| They saw photos of each other and they decided to swipe. | Zij zagen foto's van elkaar en ze besloten te swipen. |
To say you share traits or hobbies, use the phrase met elkaar gemeen hebben (to have in common with each other).
| They have a lot in common with each other, such as their interest in music. | Zij hebben veel met elkaar gemeen, zoals hun interesse in muziek. |
