Making Suggestions with "Laten we"
To make a suggestion to a group involving yourself (translated to English as "let's"), use the phrase laten we.
To complete the suggestion, use a bare infinitive (the full dictionary form of the verb). In Dutch, this infinitive is placed at the very end of the clause.
| Let's gather for the protest. | Laten we voor het protest verzamelen. |
| Let's demonstrate peacefully today. | Laten we vandaag vreedzaam demonstreren. |
Adding Objects and Details
Because the main action verb (the infinitive) is pushed to the end of the clause, any objects, time phrases, or prepositions must come directly after laten we and before the verb.
| Let's hold the banners together. | Laten we samen de spandoeken vasthouden. |
| Let's listen to the speech. | Laten we naar de toespraak luisteren. |
Adding a Purpose
You can extend your suggestion by explaining the purpose behind the action. When you use an om ... te (in order to) clause to explain why, it is added to the very end of the sentence, after the infinitive of your main suggestion.
| Let's hold the banner to show the text. | Laten we het spandoek vasthouden om de tekst te tonen. |
| Let's gather here to protect our rights. | Laten we hier verzamelen om onze rechten te beschermen. |
