Singular possessives (mijn, jouw, zijn, haar)

My (mijn)

To say "my" in Dutch, use mijn. Like in English, it comes directly before the noun.

I am looking for my key.
Ik zoek mijn sleutel.
My mother always drinks coffee.
Mijn moeder drinkt altijd koffie.

Your (jouw)

To say "your" to a single person, use jouw.

What is your name?
Wat is jouw naam?
Do you have your passport?
Heb je jouw paspoort?

His and her (zijn, haar)

Use zijn for "his" and haar for "her". Like in English, the possessive word matches the owner, not the object being owned.

Where is his phone?
Waar is zijn telefoon?
Her pen is expensive.
Haar pen is duur.

Combining possessives

You will often use multiple possessives in the same sentence.

My mother knows your brother.
Mijn moeder kent jouw broer.
His brother and her sister are here.
Zijn broer en haar zus zijn hier.
My father is looking for his passport.
Mijn vader zoekt zijn paspoort.
