Objective cause (doordat)

When talking about a direct, objective cause and effect—especially natural events outside of human control—Dutch uses the conjunction doordat ("because" or "due to the fact that").

Subordinate clauses

Like other subordinating conjunctions, doordat pushes the verb (or verbs) in its clause to the very end.

If the doordat clause comes second in the sentence, the main clause before it keeps its normal word order.

My harvest fails because the drought lasts too long.
Mijn oogst mislukt doordat de droogte te lang duurt.
The street floods because it rains hard.
De straat overstroomt doordat het hard regent.

Inversion

When you begin the sentence with the doordat clause, the main clause immediately following the comma must invert, meaning it starts with its conjugated verb.

Because the glaciers melt, the sea level rises.
Doordat de gletsjers smelten, stijgt de zeespiegel.
Because the earthquake is severe, the old tower collapses.
Doordat de aardbeving hevig is, stort de oude toren in.
