Negated addition (evenmin)

Dealing with Picky Eaters

Cooking for guests can be stressful, especially if they are picky (kieskeurig).

Is the new guest really that picky?
Is de nieuwe gast echt zo kieskeurig?

Expressing "Neither" and "Nor" with evenmin

To express "nor," "neither," or "not either," Dutch uses the adverb evenmin.

I do not eat the raw shrimp and neither does he.
Ik eet de rauwe garnaal niet en hij evenmin.
Do you not like the raw mushroom either?
Lust u de rauwe champignon evenmin?

Think of evenmin as a more formal way to say ook niet (also not). When stating that a negative condition applies to an additional person or thing, evenmin typically appears at the end of the phrase or clause.

Connecting Negative Clauses

When linking two negative statements, you can join full clauses with en (and) and place evenmin at the very end of the second clause.

She does not eat the Brussels sprout and she does not like the eggplant either.
Ze eet de spruit niet en ze lust de aubergine evenmin.
I do not eat the eggplant, and the picky man does not want it either.
Ik eet de aubergine niet en de kieskeurige man wil die evenmin.

You can also use evenmin to simply tag an additional noun onto a negative sentence without repeating the verb.

He does not like the bitter bell pepper and nor the Brussels sprout.
Hij lust de bittere paprika niet en de spruit evenmin.
I never order the shrimp and neither the mushroom.
Ik bestel de garnaal nooit en de champignon evenmin.
