Academic vocabulary
When discussing science and research, you will encounter many classical loanwords. Some take regular Dutch plural endings, like het congres (the conference), which becomes congressen.
Classical plurals: -um becomes -a
Many academic words in Dutch end in -um. Instead of adding a standard -en or -s for the plural, the -um ending often changes to -a:
- het symposium becomes symposia
- het criterium becomes criteria
- het medium becomes media
| There are many scientific conferences and symposia in this city. | Er zijn veel wetenschappelijke congressen en symposia in deze stad. |
| According to the experts, those criteria are not clear. | Volgens de experts zijn die criteria niet duidelijk. |
| The researchers share their results with various media. | De onderzoekers delen hun resultaten met verschillende media. |
The choice between -a and -s
For several common words, Dutch allows two correct plurals: the classical -a or the regular -s. In formal writing or academic contexts, the -a ending is often preferred.
- het museum: musea / museums
- het centrum: centra / centrums
| Despite the bad weather, many researchers visit the symposia in the museums. | Ondanks het slechte weer bezoeken veel onderzoekers de symposia in de musea. |
| The researchers organize lectures in various centers. | De onderzoekers organiseren lezingen in verschillende centra. |
Stages, labs, and decades
This pattern applies to many other words you will hear at academic conferences, including spaces and time periods:
- het laboratorium (the laboratory) becomes laboratoria
- het decennium (the decade) becomes decennia
- het podium (the stage) becomes podia
| Are there scientific laboratories in this area? | Zijn er wetenschappelijke laboratoria in dit gebied? |
| According to the teacher, we have investigated these criteria for decades. | Volgens de docent onderzoeken we deze criteria al decennia. |
| The experts stand on different stages during the conference. | De experts staan op verschillende podia tijdens het congres. |
