Expressing Concession with 'ook al'
The phrase ook al means "even if" or "even though".
In standard Dutch, starting a sentence with a dependent clause triggers inversion in the main clause (the verb comes before the subject). However, ook al is a unique exception. The ook al clause itself uses inversion (verb followed by subject), but the main clause keeps its regular subject-verb word order.
| Even though the module is tough, we stay motivated. | Ook al is de module pittig, wij blijven gemotiveerd. |
| Even if I work full-time, I can combine it with my studies. | Ook al werk ik voltijd, ik kan het met mijn studie combineren. |
Dedication and Adult Education
You will often use this pattern when discussing studies, balancing work, or preparing for a challenging tentamen (exam).
Whether studying deeltijd (part-time) or voltijd (full-time), you can express how someone's toewijding (dedication) overcomes a high level of difficulty.
| Even though the level is high, her dedication is great. | Ook al is het niveau hoog, haar toewijding is groot. |
| Even though they study part-time, they have completed the module. | Ook al studeren zij deeltijd, zij hebben de module afgerond. |
| Even if we take the module part-time, it remains tough. | Ook al volgen we de module deeltijd, hij blijft pittig. |
