Demonstrative pronouns (degene die, datgene wat)

The one who: degene die

To single out a specific person from a group, use degene die ("the one who" or "the person who"). Because die introduces a relative clause, verbs in that clause move to the end.

The jury selects the one who wins.
De jury selecteert degene die wint.
The one we nominate gets the trophy during the ceremony.
Degene die wij nomineren, krijgt tijdens de ceremonie de trofee.

For multiple people, add an -n to make it plural: degenen die (the ones who / the people who).

Do the ones we nominate receive a certificate?
Ontvangen degenen die wij nomineren een certificaat?

That which: datgene wat

When referring to a thing or abstract concept rather than a person, use datgene wat ("that which" or "the thing that").

Just like with die, verbs in the wat clause move to the end.

The jury selected that which we will hand out.
De jury selecteerde datgene wat we zullen uitreiken.
We are sitting and thinking about that which makes the trophy unique.
We zitten na te denken over datgene wat de trofee uniek maakt.
That which happens during the ceremony is a secret.
Datgene wat tijdens de ceremonie gebeurt, is een geheim.
