Ondanks dat is a subordinating conjunction. It introduces a dependent clause, pushing the conjugated verb in that clause to the very end.

When the main clause comes first, it keeps its normal word order:

We build a shelter, even though we are tired.
We bouwen een schuilplaats, ondanks dat we moe zijn.
He can read the compass, even though it is dark.
Hij kan het kompas lezen, ondanks dat het donker is.

If you start the sentence with the ondanks dat clause, the entire clause counts as the first position. The main clause that follows must therefore invert, placing its verb directly before the subject.
