Questions & Answers about Zašto me zoveš večeras?
Why is me before the verb, instead of after it like in English?
me is a short, unstressed pronoun (a clitic). In Croatian, these tiny words have a strict rule: they usually must go in the second position of a sentence. Here, it correctly takes the second spot right after the question word Zašto.
Where is the word for "you" in this sentence?
The verb ending tells us who is doing the action. The -š at the end of zoveš means "you" (singular) are doing the calling. You don't need to add the pronoun ti (you) unless you want to emphasize it.
How do we know zoveš means "are calling" instead of just "call"?
Croatian doesn't have a separate "continuous" tense like the English "are calling". The single present tense verb zoveš covers both "you call" and "you are calling". You just use the context of the situation to know which one makes sense in English.
Is večeras related to the word for "evening"?
Yes! It comes from večer (evening). Adding the ending -as makes it mean "this evening" or "tonight". You might recognize this same pattern from the word danas (today), which is built from dan (day).
