Questions & Answers about Ponekad gledate televizor.
How do you form the verb gledate from its dictionary form?
The dictionary form (infinitive) is gledati. For regular -ati verbs, you drop the -ti to get the stem (gleda-). Then, you add the present tense ending for "you" (plural or formal), which is -te, making it gledate.
Where is the word for "you" in this sentence?
In Croatian, the pronoun (vi for "you" plural or formal) is usually left out. The ending -te on the verb gledate already tells us exactly who is doing the watching! You only need to add vi if you really want to emphasize who is watching.
Why does this sentence use televizor instead of televizija?
Televizor technically means the physical TV set, while televizija means the TV network or programming. In Croatian, it is very common to say you are watching the physical device (gledate televizor), though you will also hear people say gledate televiziju. Both translate to "watching TV" in English.
Is televizor in the accusative case here?
Yes, because it is the direct object (the thing being watched). For masculine nouns that are inanimate (not living things), the accusative case looks exactly the same as the basic dictionary form. That is why the word does not change here!
