Questions & Answers about Ponekad pjevam doma.
How do we form "pjevam" from the dictionary word for "to sing"?
The dictionary form is pjevati. Because it is a regular -ati verb, you take off the -ti ending to get the stem (pjeva-) and then add the "I" ending, which is -m. This gives us pjevam (I sing).
Where is the word for "I" (ja) in this sentence?
You don't need it! In Croatian, the verb ending already tells us who is doing the action. The -m on the end of pjevam clearly means "I", so saying ja pjevam is usually unnecessary unless you want to emphasize that you are singing and not someone else.
Why use "doma" instead of a form of "kuća" for "at home"?
Kuća refers to a physical building (a house), while doma is a special adverb meaning "at home". If you want to say you are at your own place of residence, doma is the most natural word to use.
Is the word order strictly fixed to "Ponekad pjevam doma"?
No, Croatian word order is very flexible. You could also say Pjevam doma ponekad or Doma pjevam ponekad. However, putting the time word (ponekad) at the start of the sentence is very common.
