Questions & Answers about Među gledateljima je odjednom došlo do komešanja.
Why is the verb in the neuter form (došlo) instead of matching the spectators or the commotion?
This is an impersonal construction. Because the event itself (komešanja) is introduced by the preposition do + Genitive, the sentence actually has no grammatical subject. In Croatian, when a sentence lacks a subject, the verb defaults to the neuter singular (here, došlo je).
Why use the phrase došlo je do instead of just saying a commotion happened (dogodilo se komešanje)?
Using doći do + Genitive is a very natural way in Croatian to express that a situation emerged, escalated, or broke out. It is commonly used for spontaneous events, conflicts, or sudden changes (like accidents, arguments, or a commotion). It translates literally as it came to a commotion.
What case is gledateljima in, and why?
It is in the Instrumental case. The preposition među (among or between) requires the Instrumental when describing a static location, meaning where an event took place. If the sentence described motion directed into a group, među would take the Accusative case instead.
Why does the word komešanja end in -a here?
The base word is komešanje, which is a neuter verbal noun meaning a commotion or a stirring. It ends in -a here because the preposition do always requires the Genitive case. For neuter nouns ending in -e, the Genitive ending is -a.
