Questions & Answers about Sretan Uskrs svima!
Why is svima used here instead of svi?
The word svima is the dative case of svi (everyone or all). In Croatian, when you direct a greeting or wish at someone, the recipient takes the dative case. You are literally saying Happy Easter to everyone!
How would I change this to say 'I wish you a Happy Easter'?
You would use the verb željeti (to wish) and say Želim vam sretan Uskrs! The phrase sretan Uskrs does not change its ending here because it is a masculine inanimate noun, meaning its accusative form looks exactly the same as its nominative form.
Are holiday names always capitalized in Croatian like Uskrs is here?
Yes, names of holidays are capitalized. However, there is a catch you should remember: if a holiday name is made up of multiple words, only the first word gets capitalized in Croatian unless a later word is a proper noun. For example, New Year is written as Nova godina with a lowercase g.
Why does the adjective take the form Sretan instead of Sretni?
