Questions & Answers about Unuci posjećuju baku i djeda.
Why is the word for grandsons unuci instead of "unuki"?
The singular word for grandson is unuk. When making it plural, the k changes to a c before the plural ending -i. This is a common sound change in Croatian, similar to how dječak (boy) becomes dječaci. Note that while it translates as grandsons, unuci is also the standard word for a mixed group of grandchildren.
Why do baka and djed change to baku and djeda in this sentence?
Because they are the direct objects receiving the action of the visit, they must be in the accusative case. The feminine noun baka changes its -a ending to -u. The masculine noun djed takes an -a ending.
Wait, doesn't the -a ending on djeda mean it is in the genitive case?
It looks exactly like the genitive case! For masculine nouns, Croatian splits them into animate (living beings) and inanimate (objects). Animate masculine nouns like djed borrow the genitive ending -a for their accusative form. If they were visiting a park (park - inanimate), the word wouldn't change.
