K, G and H change before -i
The masculine plural ending is -i, but stems ending in k, g or h cannot keep those sounds before it. They shift: | change | singular | plural | | --- | --- | --- | | k → c | liječnik | liječnici | | k → c | unuk | unuci | | g → z | bubreg (kidney) | bubrezi | | h → s | orah (walnut) | orasi | The same shift happens with momak — the fleeting a leaves first, then k becomes c: momak → momci.
In use
| The doctors work in the hospital. | Liječnici rade u bolnici. |
| The grandsons visit their grandma and grandpa. | Unuci posjećuju baku i djeda. |
Where it does NOT happen
Feminine nouns in -ka keep their k in the plural (banka → banke), because their ending is -e, not -i.
