Questions & Answers about Vani je vjetrovito.
Why does vjetrovito end in -o?
When talking about general weather conditions, Croatian uses an impersonal sentence. Since there is no actual noun (like a masculine or feminine object) being described, the word takes the neuter form, which ends in -o.
Where is the word for 'it' in this sentence?
In English, we need 'it' as a placeholder subject to say 'It is windy'. Croatian doesn't use placeholder subjects for weather. You just use the verb je (is) and the weather word vjetrovito (windy).
Why is je placed after Vani instead of at the beginning?
You cannot start a sentence with je. It is an enclitic, which is a 'weak' word that needs to lean on another word. In Croatian, enclitics usually must take the second position in a sentence, so it comes right after the first word, Vani.
