Asking about the weather
The question is Kakvo je vrijeme? — what is the weather like? Croatian answers it with two impersonal patterns, both without a subject.
Pattern 1: adverb + je
A weather adverb plus je, with no subject at all: | statement | meaning | | --- | --- | | Sunčano je. | It is sunny. | | Oblačno je. | It is cloudy. | | Vjetrovito je. | It is windy. | | Hladno je. | It is cold. |
| Today it is sunny and warm. | Danas je sunčano i toplo. |
Pattern 2: pada + noun
Rain and snow FALL in Croatian: Pada kiša. (It is raining.) Pada snijeg. (It is snowing.) The verb padati you already know does the work: Pada kiša, nosim kišobran.
More weather words
magla is fog, nebo the sky, and temperature is counted in degrees — stupanj, plural stupnjeva after numbers: Danas je trideset stupnjeva.
