Questions & Answers about Oblačno je, ali nije hladno.
Why do weather words like oblačno and hladno end in -o here?
When describing the weather in general, Croatian uses an impersonal construction. Because there is no specific masculine or feminine subject, these descriptive words take the neuter singular ending -o. It is similar to saying 'the general situation is cloudy'.
Where is the word for 'it' in this sentence?
Croatian almost always drops subject pronouns like 'it' because the verb already makes the meaning clear. For impersonal weather statements, there isn't a real subject anyway, so you just use the verb je (is) or nije (is not) along with the descriptive word.
Why is 'is not' written as the single word nije?
Usually, the negative word ne is placed right before the verb as a separate word. However, the present tense of 'to be' (biti) is an exception. The negative word and the verb merge into one word, so ne + je becomes nije.
Why does je come after oblačno, and could I put it at the beginning?
The word je is a 'clitic', which is a type of short, unstressed word that leans on the word before it. Because it needs to lean on something, a clitic can never be the very first word in a standard sentence. It naturally falls into the second position, right after oblačno.
