Nemojte trčati, pod je sklizak!

Questions & Answers about Nemojte trčati, pod je sklizak!

Why do we use nemojte here instead of just nemoj?
Nemojte is the plural or formal singular form for "don't". The speaker is either addressing a group of people or talking to someone formally. If you were warning one friend, you would simply say nemoj trčati.
Why is the verb trčati in its dictionary form (the infinitive)?
That is the standard rule for this type of negative command! When you use the helper word nemoj or nemojte to tell someone not to do something, the main action verb that follows it is always in the infinitive, which usually ends in -ti or -ći.
How do we know the gender of pod (floor) from this sentence?
You can tell pod is a masculine noun for two reasons: it naturally ends in a consonant, and the adjective describing it (sklizak) is also in its default masculine form.
Why does the adjective sklizak end in -ak?
The ending -ak is a common masculine ending for adjectives. Because it describes pod, it takes this form. If we were warning about a slippery road (cesta, which is feminine), we would say cesta je skliska. The extra a drops out and the z changes to an s to make it easier to pronounce!
