Questions & Answers about Danas jedemo juhu od domaćeg povrća.
Why does domaćeg end in -eg instead of -og?
Domaćeg is in the genitive case because it follows the preposition od (from/of). For masculine and neuter adjectives, the standard genitive ending is -og. However, because the stem of domaći ends in a soft consonant (ć), the ending changes to -eg.
The English translation says vegetables (plural), but povrća and domaćeg seem to be singular. Why?
In Croatian, povrće (vegetables) is a collective noun. Even though it refers to multiple items, it is grammatically treated as a neuter singular noun. Because of this, the adjective describing it, domaćeg, must also be in the neuter singular form.
Why do we use od here?
When describing what a dish or drink is made of, Croatian commonly uses the preposition od (from/of) followed by the genitive case. So, vegetable soup is literally expressed as juha od povrća (soup of vegetables).
Why is the word for soup spelled juhu instead of juha?
