Questions & Answers about Vozač pita kuhara.
Why is the word for cook kuhara instead of just kuhar?
In Croatian, when a masculine noun represents a living being (like a person or animal) and receives the action of the verb, it gets an -a added to the end. The dictionary form is kuhar, but since he is the object being asked, it becomes the animate accusative form kuhara.
Why doesn't vozač get an -a at the end too?
Because the driver is the one doing the action (the subject). The subject of a sentence always stays in the nominative (dictionary) form, which is vozač. We only add the -a to the masculine living being that is receiving the action (the object).
If I change the word order to Kuhara pita vozač, does the meaning change?
No, the meaning stays exactly the same. Because of the endings, we know vozač is the subject and kuhara is the object. In Croatian, these endings tell you who is doing what, so word order is much more flexible than in English.
Does pita mean 'asks' or 'is asking'?
It can mean both! Croatian does not have a separate continuous tense like English. The present tense verb pita translates to either 'asks' or 'is asking' depending on what makes the most sense in the context.
