When attending a formal event like a farewell or retirement party, you will often need to congratulate or thank people. In Croatian, verbs for these social actions require a specific sentence structure: the person receiving the action is in the Dative case, and the reason for the action takes the preposition na followed by the Locative case.
Congratulating
To congratulate someone, use the verb čestitati. Remember the formula: čestitati nekome (Dative person) na nečemu (Locative reason).
| Colleague, I congratulate you on your retirement and success! | Kolega, čestitam ti na mirovini i uspjehu! |
Notice how ti (you) is in the Dative, while mirovini (retirement) and uspjehu (success) are in the Locative following na. This rule applies whether you are speaking directly to someone or describing an event.
| At this farewell, the director congratulates him on his success. | Na ovom oproštaju, direktor mu čestita na uspjehu. |
Expressing Gratitude
The verb zahvaliti (to thank) uses the exact same structure. This is highly useful for formal speeches and toasts.
| Everyone wants to thank her for the important contribution and dedication. | Svi joj žele zahvaliti na važnom doprinosu i predanosti. |
When addressing someone formally or speaking to a group, be sure to use the correct Dative pronoun, such as Vam (formal singular) or vam (plural).
| I want to thank you for the generosity and warm hospitality. | Želim Vam zahvaliti na velikodušnosti i toplom gostoprimstvu. |
| I want to thank you for the long-standing collaboration. | Želim vam zahvaliti na dugogodišnjoj suradnji. |
Expressing Envy
This structure (Dative + na + Locative) is not limited to polite pleasantries. It is also used to express feelings like envy with the verb zavidjeti (to envy).
| If you come to his farewell, you will envy him for the gifts. | Ako dođeš na njegov oproštaj, zavidjet ćeš mu na poklonima. |

You can combine these verb structures with professional vocabulary like prigoda (occasion) or vodstvo (leadership) to create elegant farewell speeches.
