Verbs of Dispersion
In Croatian, the verbal prefix raz- conveys the idea of spreading out, separating, scattering, or distributing. This makes it extremely useful for gardening tasks.
Depending on the first letter of the root word, the prefix changes its spelling to make pronunciation easier by matching the voicing of the following consonant:
- raz- is used before vowels and voiced consonants (like d or v).
- ras- is used before voiceless consonants (like p, t, or k).
Notice how raz- remains intact before a vowel in the verb for scattering, while it changes to ras- before a voiceless consonant in the adjective for "loose":
| I scattered the seeds into the loose soil. | Razasuo sam sjeme u rastresito tlo. |
When attaching to verbs starting with voiceless consonants, the prefix consistently becomes ras-:
| We must transplant the plants and arrange them in the garden. | Moramo rasaditi biljke i rasporediti ih u vrtu. |
| Do not spray too much water over the flowers. | Nemoj raspršiti previše vode po cvijeću. |
| I will dig up the soil until I find the root. | Raskopat ću tlo dok ne nađem korijen. |
Consonant Merging
If the base word already begins with an s or š, the s from the ras- prefix merges with the first letter so that you only write and pronounce one consonant. For example, combining the prefix with the root for "to spread" results in raširiti.
| The garden in which the root spread is very large. | Vrt u kojem se korijen raširio vrlo je velik. |
Division and Destruction
When the root verb begins with a voiced consonant, the prefix stays raz-, as seen when separating or dividing up items.
| She will separate the leaves and divide up the fertilizer. | Ona će razdvojiti lišće i razdijeliti gnojivo. |
Finally, because this prefix inherently means taking things apart or moving them away from a center, it is frequently used with verbs that express destruction or tearing things apart.
| The storm destroyed the fence, so we had to dig up the yard again. | Oluja je razorila ogradu, pa smo morali opet raskopati dvorište. |
