Taking Things Apart

In the previous lesson, we saw how the prefix raz- (or ras-) expresses dispersion or spreading out. A closely related use is for actions that involve taking things apart, breaking them down, or dismantling them. This makes it highly useful when discussing recycling, waste management, and industrial processes.

Just like before, the prefix spelling depends on the first letter of the root word to make pronunciation easier:

• raz- is used before vowels and voiced consonants (like v or g).
• ras- is used before voiceless consonants (like t or p).

When managing waste for a landfill (odlagalište), items first need to be separated or sorted out:

Chemical and Physical Breakdown

This prefix also applies when materials are broken down on a chemical or physical level, rather than just manually separated. For example, when nature decomposes materials, or when a plant (pogon) melts down metals:

Taking things apart mechanically or physically naturally extends to acts of destruction. When objects are cut to pieces or forcefully shattered, the raz- prefix emphasizes the breaking apart of the original object into multiple pieces or raw materials (sirovine).
