Needing Things (Impersonal "Trebati")
When you need a specific thing or person, Croatian uses an impersonal sentence structure. The person who has the need is placed in the Dative case (such as mi for "to me"), and the thing that is needed becomes the grammatical subject.
Because the needed thing is the subject, the verb trebati (to need) must conjugate to match it, not the person. If you need one thing, use the singular treba. If you need multiple things, use the plural trebaju.
| I urgently need your help! | Hitno mi treba tvoja pomoć! |
| I need these documents and your signature urgently. | Trebaju mi ovi dokumenti i tvoj potpis hitno. |
To express that you do not need something, simply put ne before the verb. The structure remains exactly the same.
| I do not need your signature for every document. | Ne treba mi tvoj potpis za svaki dokument. |
Giving Advice
When expressing needs and solutions, you will often ask for or give advice. The verb savjetovati (to advise) works similarly to the impersonal trebati: the person receiving the advice takes the Dative case.
| What do you advise me as a quick solution? | Što mi savjetujete kao brzo rješenje? |
Needing to Act (Personal "Trebati")
When you need to do something—or when telling someone they "should" do something—trebati behaves like a standard, personal verb. You conjugate trebati to match the person performing the action, and follow it immediately with the infinitive form of the second verb.
| We definitely need to find a good solution. | Obavezno trebamo naći dobro rješenje. |
You will frequently pair these personal and impersonal needs with adverbs like hitno (urgently), obavezno (definitely / absolutely), or barem (at least) to emphasize the importance of the action.
| You absolutely need to read this important document. | Obavezno trebate čitati ovaj važan dokument. |
Once you master both forms, you can easily switch between receiving advice, needing things, and needing to act!
| The doctor advises me rest, but I urgently need to finish the document. | Liječnik mi savjetuje odmor, ali hitno trebam završiti dokument. |
