The Locative Case and "u" (in)
To express where something is located, Croatian uses the locative case with prepositions like u (in) and na (on, at).
For masculine and neuter nouns in the singular, the locative ending is -u.
- For masculine nouns, add -u: ured (office) → u uredu
- For neuter nouns, replace the final -o or -e with -u: selo (village) → u selu
Use u for being inside a place or enclosed space.
| He is in the office. | On je u uredu. |
| I am not in the office today. | Danas nisam u uredu. |
| We are in the village now. | Mi smo sada u selu. |
Location with "na" (on, at)
Use na for being on a surface, as well as for open or public areas like a square, an island, or a railway station. The noun endings are exactly the same.
| The book is on the bed. | Knjiga je na krevetu. |
| The train is at the railway station. | Vlak je na kolodvoru. |
| They live on an island. | Žive na otoku. |
| Your hotel is on the square. | Vaš hotel je na trgu. |
