Croatian buildings count floors from the ground up: prizemlje is the ground floor, and kat is a storey above it — na prvom katu is one floor up. lift is the elevator and zahod the toilet.

stanovati is to reside — the verb behind stan: Stanujem u malom stanu. To rent that stan, use iznajmiti: Želim iznajmiti stan u centru.

hladnjak is the fridge — hladan (cold) is hiding inside the word.
