Prepositions and the relative pronoun 'koji'

In English, we often end a sentence with a preposition (e.g., "the apartment we live in"). In Croatian, the preposition cannot be left at the end of the clause. It must come right before the relative pronoun (e.g., "the apartment in which we live").

The preposition you use determines the case of the relative pronoun koji.

Locative case: 'u' (in) and 'o' (about)

When talking about locations you are in (u) or topics you are discussing (o), you need the locative case. The locative forms of koji are exactly the same as the dative forms you already know!

For masculine nouns like smještaj (accommodation), use kojem:

When referring to plural nouns of any gender, use kojima:

Instrumental case: 's' (with)

When you describe someone you do things with, or something you agree or make peace with, you use the preposition s (with). This preposition requires the instrumental case.
