Regular Verbs Ending in -jeti
The next major group of regular verbs ends in -jeti, such as vidjeti (to see) and živjeti (to live).
In the present tense, these verbs follow the exact same pattern as -iti verbs. Drop -jeti from the infinitive to find the stem and add the endings:
| Pronoun | Ending | Example (vidjeti) |
|---|---|---|
| ja | -im | vidim |
| ti | -iš | vidiš |
| on / ona / ono | -i | vidi |
| mi | -imo | vidimo |
| vi / Vi | -ite | vidite |
| oni / one / ona | -e | vide |
| I see this cheese. | Ja vidim ovaj sir. |
Expressing Desires and Preferences
Two common -jeti verbs are željeti (to want) and voljeti (to love, to like).
| I only want juice. | Želim samo sok. |
| We love juice and cheese. | Mi volimo sok i sir. |
You can also follow željeti or voljeti with a second verb in its infinitive form.
| Students like to study Croatian. | Studenti vole učiti hrvatski. |
| I am not tired, I just want to sleep. | Ja nisam umoran, samo želim spavati. |
Living and Moving
Other common verbs in this group include živjeti (to live) and letjeti (to fly).
| You live here, and we live there. | Ti živiš ovdje, a mi živimo tamo. |
| This bird flies far. | Ova ptica leti daleko. |
States of Being
Verbs like šutjeti (to be silent) describe states of being.
| Why are they always silent? | Zašto oni uvijek šute? |
| I am just silent and I watch a film. | Ja samo šutim i gledam film. |
