Professions and tools (-ač, -telj, -ar)

Professions and Roles: The Suffixes -ač, -telj, and -ar

Croatian frequently builds nouns for professions and roles by attaching specific suffixes to verbs or existing nouns.

  • -ač: Added to verbs to mean "the one who does [the action]". For example, from osnivati (to found) we get osnivač (founder).
  • -telj: Also added to verbs to denote a professional or agent. From razvijati (to develop), we get razvijatelj (developer).
  • -ar: Usually added to existing nouns to describe someone who works with that field or object. From informatika (informatics/IT), we get informatičar (IT specialist).
The founder is looking for a new developer for the project.
Osnivač traži novog razvijatelja za projekt.
The system manager is the best IT specialist here.
Upravitelj sustava je najbolji informatičar ovdje.

Tools, Apps, and Software Programs

The suffixes -ač and -telj aren't just for human professions. In modern tech, they are widely used to name software programs, apps, and digital tools—treating the program as the "instrument" performing the task.

For example, a search engine (from pretraživati, to search) is a pretraživač.

This search engine which works on the new server is fast.
Ovaj pretraživač koji radi na novom serveru je brz.

Some words function seamlessly as both a human profession and a digital tool. A prevoditelj (translator) can refer to a bilingual person, or it can be a piece of software doing the translation.

A good translator can make the job easier.
Dobar prevoditelj može olakšati posao.
The software works as a translator.
Softver radi kao prevoditelj.

This pattern applies across hardware and digital interface elements as well. You will see it used to describe tools like a reader (čitač), a launcher (pokretač), or a numerical counter (brojač).

The new reader is very accurate.
Novi čitač je vrlo točan.
The IT specialist added a counter to the page.
Informatičar je dodao brojač na stranicu.

Notice that all these derived nouns end in a consonant, which makes them masculine. They follow standard masculine noun declension rules across all grammatical cases.
