The Preposition "za"
When you want to express purpose, destination, or who something is intended for, use the preposition za (for). In all of these uses, the noun or pronoun following za must take the accusative case.
Purpose and Beneficiary
Use za to indicate the purpose of an item or its intended recipient. When applying the accusative case, remember these key endings:
- Feminine nouns ending in -a change to -u (e.g., dostava becomes za dostavu).
- Masculine animate nouns (people) add an -a (e.g., primatelj becomes za primatelja).
- Masculine inanimate nouns (objects or concepts) do not change from their dictionary form (e.g., novi posao remains za novi posao).
| This shipment is ready for delivery. | Ova pošiljka je spremna za dostavu. |
| The delivery person is looking for the address for the recipient. | Dostavljač traži adresu za primatelja. |
| That delivery person didn't take a vehicle for the new job. | Taj dostavljač nije uzeo vozilo za novi posao. |
Destinations
In the context of shipping and logistics, za is also used to state where freight or a parcel is headed.
Many common logistics terms are neuter nouns, such as vozilo (vehicle), odredište (destination), and skladište (warehouse). Conveniently, neuter nouns do not change their endings in the accusative case—they look exactly the same as they do in the nominative.
| Today we are packing shipments for Germany. | Danas pakiramo pošiljke za Njemačku. |
| Is that freight for that vehicle? | Je li onaj teret za to vozilo? |
| I am sorry, we didn't send the freight for that destination. | Žao mi je, nismo poslali teret za to odredište. |
| The workers in the company are packing those products for that warehouse. | Radnici u tvrtki pakiraju te proizvode za to skladište. |
