"Before" (Prije nego što)

To express that an event happens before another action, use the phrase prije nego što.

Present and Future Actions

For general habits, instructions, or future events, the verb following prije nego što takes the present tense. The main clause can use the present tense, future tense, or an imperative.

I like to check the equipment before I climb.
Volim provjeriti opremu prije nego što se penjem.
I will tie the rope before we set off.
Vezat ću uže prije nego što krenemo.
Check your safety harness before you climb.
Provjeri svoj sigurnosni pojas prije nego što se penješ.

Past Sequences

When recounting events that have already happened, both clauses take the past tense (perfekt).

The guide warned us before we started.
Vodič nas je upozorio prije nego što smo krenuli.
