Groups and Gatherings: The Plural Instrumental
To talk about doing activities with groups, use the plural instrumental case. The plural forms are simpler than the singular, with only two main endings to learn.
Masculine and Neuter Nouns (-ima)
The plural instrumental ending for regular masculine and neuter nouns is -ima.
- For masculine nouns, add this to the base word. If a noun ends in -k, the k changes to c before the ending (e.g., poznanik becomes poznanicima).
- For neuter nouns, replace the final -o or -e with -ima.
| We socialized with acquaintances yesterday. | Jučer smo se družili s poznanicima. |
| The audience had fun with the dancers. | Publika se zabavljala s plesačima. |
| We often hang out with musicians at festivals. | Često se družimo s glazbenicima na festivalima. |
Feminine and -a Nouns (-ama)
For regular feminine nouns ending in -a, replace the -a with -ama in the plural instrumental.
This ending is also used for masculine nouns that end in -a, such as kolega (colleague).
| We had fun at the festival with friends. | Zabavljali smo se na festivalu s prijateljicama. |
| We were at a party with colleagues. | Bili smo na zabavi s kolegama. |
Describing Groups: Adjectives
When describing a plural instrumental noun with an adjective (or pointing to it with a demonstrative like "these"), the adjective simply takes the ending -im across all genders.
| No one had fun with the boring acquaintances. | Nitko se nije zabavljao s dosadnim poznanicima. |
| The director agrees with these meetings. | Direktor se slaže s ovim susretima. |
