Meeting Deadlines with Perfective Verbs
In professional and academic contexts, we often focus on finishing tasks by a rok (deadline). As you have seen, we can add prefixes to imperfective verbs to make them perfective, shifting the focus to a completed action. For example, pisati (to write) becomes napisati (to write to completion).
| I must write the report by the deadline. | Moram napisati izvještaj do roka. |
Similarly, perfective verbs like pripremiti (to prepare completely) are used to emphasize that a project or task was done uspješno (successfully).
| She successfully prepared the presentation. | Uspješno je pripremila prezentaciju. |
Working and Reading
Prefixes often add a nuance of finishing or exhausting an action to a base verb.
- raditi (to work) becomes odraditi (to complete a job or task).
- čitati (to read) becomes pročitati (to read through to the end).
- misliti (to think) becomes smisliti (to come up with an idea or plan).
Notice the contrast below between an ongoing process (imperfective) and a finished result (perfective):

Solving and Fixing
When dealing with problems or broken equipment, use perfective verbs to show that the issue is fully resolved. Key perfective verbs for your workday include riješiti (to solve) and popraviti (to fix).
| We successfully solved the problem before the deadline. | Uspješno smo riješili problem prije roka. |
| The worker will fix the television tomorrow. | Radnik će sutra popraviti televizor. |
Studying vs. Learning
Studying is an ongoing process, while successfully mastering the material is a completed event. The imperfective verb učiti (to study/learn) becomes the perfective naučiti (to learn completely) when the knowledge is successfully acquired.
| She studied a lot and finally learned the rule. | Puno je učila i konačno naučila pravilo. |
| The student learned the rule and solved the task. | Student je naučio pravilo i riješio zadatak. |
