To describe movement through a space, use the preposition kroz with the Accusative case.
Masculine Nouns
Many words for passages are masculine inanimate nouns (e.g., tunel, prolaz, kanjon). For these words, the Accusative form is identical to the Nominative (dictionary) form. Any modifying adjectives also remain unchanged.
| My dog always runs through the dark tunnel. | Moj pas uvijek trči kroz mračni tunel. |
| His brother walks through the narrow passage. | Njegov brat hoda kroz uski prolaz. |
| The river flows through the deep canyon. | Rijeka teče kroz duboki kanjon. |
Feminine Nouns
Feminine nouns ending in -a, like rupa (hole), change their ending to -u in the Accusative singular (rupu). This is often paired with the reflexive verb provući se (to squeeze through).
| to squeeze through | provući se |
| The cat can squeeze through that hole. | Mačka se može provući kroz tu rupu. |
Plural Passages
For both masculine nouns (like tunel) and feminine nouns (like rupa), the plural Accusative ends in -e (tunele, rupe).
| Trains pass through long tunnels. | Vlakovi prolaze kroz duge tunele. |
| Water often flows through these small holes. | Voda često teče kroz ove male rupe. |
Paths and Destinations
The verb voditi (to lead) is frequently used with kroz to describe where paths, roads, or passages go.
| This passage leads through a dangerous labyrinth. | Ovaj prolaz vodi kroz opasan labirint. |
| The road leads through the high vault. | Cesta vodi kroz visoki svod. |
