In Croatian, the word for "man" or "person" is čovjek, but its plural is a completely different word: ljudi (people).

Notice that there are only three distinct forms to learn: ljudi, ljudima, and ljude.
The Base Form: ljudi (Nominative, Genitive, Vocative)
The form ljudi is used as the subject (Nominative), to express quantities (Genitive), and when addressing a group directly (Vocative).

The -ima Form: ljudima (Dative, Locative, Instrumental)
For the Dative (indirect objects), Locative (topics of conversation), and Instrumental (such as being surrounded by or among people) cases, the form is ljudima.

| My father likes to be among people. | Moj otac voli biti među ljudima. |

The -e Form: ljude (Accusative)
When "people" is the direct object or the object of certain prepositions (like na), it takes the form ljude.
