Food and meals (jelo, riba, piletina)

Talking about food

You already know the basic foods (kruh, mlijeko, sir, meso) and the meals doručak, ručak and večera. This lesson adds the everyday food words Croatian tables actually use.

The word for a dish

jelo is a dish or a prepared meal — what you order in a restaurant or cook at home: Ovo jelo je stvarno dobro. The menu in a restaurant is a list of jela.

Meat and fish

piletina is chicken as food — like English, Croatian uses a different word for the meat than for the animal. riba is both the animal and the food: Danas jedemo ribu i krumpir.

Fruit and breakfast

Remember the genitive after quantities from the previous lesson: malo jogurta, puno banana: Kupujem malo jogurta i puno banana.
